VLANs

MSK-IX operates an Ethernet network supporting VLAN tagging in accordance with IEEE 802.1Q standard. In each location (city of presence), the following types of VLANs are supported:

  • Common (peering) VLAN is used for establishing peering sessions between participants via a Route Server or on bilateral basis. A most common service for new participants.

  • Private VLAN (Layer 2 VPN) is used for isolating traffic between ports allocated to one or more participants.

  • Multicast VLAN is used for data transmission via multicast protocols.

  • Quarantine VLAN is used for testing and configuration debugging purposes when connecting to MSK-IX.

Ports

MSK-IX supports the following port configurations:

  • Untagged port. Default configuration for accessing one VLAN via one physical interface.

  • Trunk port. Access to multiple VLANs via one physical interface.

  • Q-in-Q tunneling. Allows a Layer 2 Ethernet connection between two customer interfaces on MSK-IX network by encapsulating one 802.1Q trunk inside another.

  • LACP Etherchannel. Allows multiple physical interfaces to combine into one logical channel.

Restrictions:
  1. Trunk ports in Moscow and in St. Petersburg can only be used to simultaneously access Common (peering) VLANs in the two cities with the MIX service .

  2. Q-in-Q is only allowed on untagged ports configured into private VLANs.
